Catch up on past years, or fix a return you already filed.
Missed a year, or found a mistake after filing? I prepare late returns for prior years and amended returns (Form 1040-X), in English or Spanish, and tell you exactly which papers we still need.
When this helps
- You did not file for one or more years
- A W-2 or 1099 arrived after you had already filed
- You used the wrong filing status, or left out a dependent or a credit
- The IRS sent a letter saying income was missing from your return
- You need returns for past years for a loan, an apartment or an immigration case
Good to know
- Refunds have a deadline. You generally have 3 years from a return's original due date to claim a refund: for tax year 2023, that is April 15, 2027.
- If you owe, filing stops the failure-to-file penalty from growing. Interest and the late-payment penalty keep adding up until the tax is paid.
- Lost your W-2s or 1099s? Your IRS Online Account has wage and income transcripts that list what employers reported for recent years.
- Amended returns use Form 1040-X. The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks for one to be processed, and sometimes up to 16.
- Texas has no state income tax, so there is no state return to catch up on.
What to have ready
- The years you need, and any W-2s, 1099s or other income forms you still have for them
- Your wage and income transcripts, if you are missing forms
- The return you want to fix, if you are amending
- Every letter the IRS has sent about those years
- The last return you filed
The request form on this site never asks for a Social Security number.
How it works
- Tell me which years Send a request on this site with what you have. Phone photos are fine.
- Hear what is missing I reply with exactly which forms or transcripts I still need, year by year.
- Review, then file I prepare each return, go over it with you, and file it once you approve.
Questions
Can you do several years at once?
Yes. Each year is its own return, and many people catch up on every missing year together.
How far back can you go?
I can prepare returns for earlier years when the forms are available. The IRS accepts electronic filing for the current year and the two before it; older years are filed on paper. For a refund, only years still within the 3-year limit count.
Will filing late get me in trouble?
Filing late is more common than people think. Filing stops the failure-to-file penalty from growing, and if you are owed a refund it is the only way to get it. If the IRS has already written to you, include the letter with your request.
How much does it cost?
It depends on how many years and which forms. You get a quote before any work starts.
Do I have to come to an office?
No. Everything can be sent online, and we can go over your returns remotely, in English or Spanish.
