Self-employed · 1099 · English / Español
Taxes for 1099 work, done right and explained in your language.
Drive for an app, clean houses, work a trade or sell on the side? I prepare self-employed returns, find the expenses you can deduct, and show you how much to set aside for next year, in English or Spanish.
Who this is for
- Rideshare and delivery drivers
- House cleaners, landscapers, construction and other trades
- Stylists, nail techs and barbers who rent a chair or work on their own
- Sellers, freelancers and anyone with side income
- People with a W-2 job and 1099 work in the same year
Good to know
- All self-employment income counts, even when no 1099 arrives.
- If your net earnings from self-employment are $400 or more, you owe self-employment tax: 15.3%, which is 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.
- Business expenses lower your profit, and with it that tax: business miles, supplies and tools, the business share of your phone, and more. Keep a mileage log and your receipts.
- Many eligible self-employed people can also deduct up to 20% of their qualified business income.
- Payers have until February 1, 2027 to send Form 1099-NEC (January 31 falls on a Sunday). Apps may send a 1099-K, a 1099-NEC or only a yearly summary.
- The last 2026 estimated tax payment is due January 15, 2027. Payments for 2027 are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2027, and in January 2028.
- Texas has no state income tax, so there is no state return for your 1099 income.
What to have ready
- Every 1099-NEC, 1099-K and app yearly summary you received
- A record of income that came with no 1099: bank deposits, cash, Zelle, Venmo or Cash App
- Your mileage log, or the mileage summary from the app
- Receipts or bank statements for supplies, tools, phone and business insurance
- Any estimated payments you made for 2026, with their dates
- Last year's tax return
The request form on this site never asks for a Social Security number.
How it works
- Send a request Tell me what kind of work you do and send what you have. Phone photos are fine.
- Hear what is missing I reply with exactly which records I still need, including expenses people often miss.
- Review, then file I prepare your return, show you what to set aside for next year, and file it once you approve.
Questions
I was paid in cash or by Zelle and got no 1099. Do I report it?
Yes. All self-employment income is reported, with or without a 1099. Your bank deposits and your own records are enough to work from.
What can I deduct?
Ordinary and necessary business costs: business miles, supplies, tools, part of your phone, business insurance, the fees an app takes from your pay, and more. I go through them with you so nothing is missed.
Do I have to make estimated payments?
If you expect to owe $1,000 or more for the year after withholding and credits, the IRS generally expects quarterly payments. I can tell you how much to send and when.
I have a W-2 job and 1099 work. Is that one return?
Yes. Both go on the same return; the 1099 work goes on Schedule C.
How much does it cost?
It depends on your forms and how many kinds of work you do. You get a quote before any work starts.
